To accept the position the winners MUST pay World's entry fees in cash on site after the regatta. Based upon the estimated 2001 allocation of 14 places for the North American region, the following qualification system was established in the fall of 2000. These qualification rules apply to the first 14 North American places. Rule 1: Sailors may qualify in each of the following. If a sailor has already qualified or does not wish to attend the World Championship, the place shall be offered to subsequent positions down to third except for the GP. • 2001 U.S. Champs 2 places • 2001 NA Champs 2 places • 2001 CORK 2 places • 2001 Grand Prix 1st place • 2001 Canadian Champs 2 places Rule 2: The six remaining places will be awarded based on the 2001 Laser Grand Prix standings. Clarification posted November 11, 2001: ( The six mentioned here include the GP winner if he has not otherwise qualified when the GP becomes final.) Overriding Rule: Some of the available positions are based upon membership in individual countries and some are based upon the membership in the North American region. Available positions for the 2000 worlds included 2 Canadian, 4 US and 6 North American at large spots. The Worlds positions in the designated regattas are available to any competitor in the North American Region. Sailors who qualify will fill country positions for their home country first. North American at large positions will be assigned when competitors who qualify have no country spots available. If there are country positions that have not been filled by qualification in the designated regattas, those positions will be filled using the Grand Prix rankings. The country positions will be filled before the Grand Prix based region positions are assigned. This overrides Rule 2 should the situation arise. Place 15: 2002 US Nationals: The top North American finisher who was also a current member of the North American class as of September 30, 2001 and who does not have a 2002 worlds berth. ( Filled by Ben Richardson) Place 16: 2002 CORK: It is our current intention to award a berth to the top North American finisher who was also a current member of the North American class as of September 30, 2001 and who does not have a 2002 worlds berth. Two Clarifications added October 30, 2001 Places 17 and 18 have been confirmed! Standard procedure for allocation of North American berths is to fill the country berths first and then assign Region berths. With the announcement of the "host country berths" for Hyannis, two region berths become available for the last chance event. 1. Places 17 and 18: "Last Chance" event Sayville, Long Island, New York on August 24 and 25 2. Also: As of August 1, 2002 we will inventory our available berths. Place 16 will still be set aside for CORK. Two berths are set aside for the Last Chance event and all other berths available to North America will be offered to then current North American ILCA Members according to the 2001 Grand Prix rankings. Any additional berths that are made available after August 1, 2002 will be offered according to finish in the Last Chance event. Any berths that become available before August first and are still not assigned by the beginning of the competitors meeting for the Last Chance regatta will be offered according to finish in the Last Chance Regatta. Berth Assignment: A world's berth is "assigned" to a competitor when that competitor has registered with the ILCA and paid the appropriate fees to the ILCA for worlds entry.
