Re: 2005 Laser Worlds Day One Results

I believe Mark Mendelblatt has moved onto a Americas Cup gig, and Brad Funk
had shoulder surgery so he couldn't attend. I think Andrew Campbell is
finishing up at Georgetown U. Those guys generally sail even with Brenden
Casey who is currently 6th in Gold.

On another note, Croatia has a solid opti program. The world champion for a
couple of years in a row was from Croatia.

To be competitive at a world class level requires constant sailing and
consistent coaching. This all costs major $$$. Sailors in other countries
are viewed as athletes and are in many cases funded by their home countries.
Most of the US sailors have to foot the bill themselves which can run into
may tens of thousands of dollars. With that in mind, days that could be
spent on training and competing are dedicated to fund raising and
appearances. Until there is a cultural shift with respect to how sailors are
viewed and funded, it will continue to be an uphill battle.
