Rivits

As has been discussed, stainless steel rivits are hot spots for
corrosion, and aluminum pop rivits tend to be weak. The best
alternative is 3/16 aluminum drive-pin rivits, though they can be hard
to find. The metal is much thicker than in pop rivits, and the drive
pin in the middle means that the holding region is essentially solid
metal rather than hollow. They are even easy to replace because you can
use a small pin punch to drive the pin out the back side, and then [with
some effort] withdraw the rivit from the front side.
