Re: Quiet list

OK John, let's talk Laser Sailing. But let's cut the techno bull and
"stear" the conversation toward the things that really make a Laser sailor
good, i.e. practice and how much time in the boat the good guys spent to
get good. What kind of drills do the good guys do? Anybody use video to
help their boathandling? What exactly is your "offseason training ritual"
or is there really no off season for the better sailors? Let's face it,
the Laser is a difficult boat to sail and some folks just can't cut it.
Let's not try to
make it any easier because someone doesn't want to get strong enough to
sail the boat. Maybe selling the athleticism of the boat will get more of
the right folks involved. Too many weiners spoil the beans. What's wrong
with telling someone who's 135lbs that maybe a Sunfish would be a better
boat for him/her? Not too PC?. How about a weight minimum of 155 lbs at
all major championships?
As to all the expensive lines and carbon fiber techno add-ons, I say NOT.
Home Depot rules. Give me an andodized aluminium tiller and a 46"pvc
tiller extension any day. It does the job at 1/20th the price. ($10) Too
many folks are hung up on squeezing that last .01 kt out of their boat by
having what they beleive to be the perfect rig setup when what they really
should be doing is keeping it real by just doing it. Then they take their
tricked out beauty and proceed to miss shift after shift, get herded to the
wrong side of the course, finish poorly and still find an excuses outside
of their own lack of TRUE preparation.
Hope I've said enough to wake up a few of you lazy buggers. Merry New
Year. JK
