Dwight LeComte of Norwalk, CT repeated as champ of the Fall Series. The
season ended on a wild day, with wind from the south gusting over 40 knots at
times in a hard rain. With Dwight serving his turn on RC, Steve Girling won
the day over an 11-boat fleet.
For the series, 26 people qualified, breaking the old record of 24. (8 more
COULD have qualified by sailing the last day!) The 71 participants (27 CPYC
members, 31 winter members, 13 guests) smashed the old record of 61. While
only 75 races were completed over the 10 weeks, a record 2,000 scores were
recorded, in wind, rain, cold and snow. Dwight's average of 2.638 was not a
record, but his winning margin of 2.085 was - more than 2 full points ahead
of second place!
Newcomer Nigel Thomas from England moved into 2nd on the final day, edging
Chris Johannessen who missed the last two weeks. Tim Maier, who in 1996
claimed the Caboose Award, may have earned an unprecedented third Most
Improved prize with his 4th place finish. Steve Girling captured fifth. In
fact, all three of our British ex-pats finished in the top 10.
