We use popcicle sticks and streamers, the kind found at hobby craft stores. Start the hole in the ice with your awls.
Use 1" bright orange marking tape for streamers or ballons which are great.
Get rolls of marking tape at hardware stores.
Make a bunch of flags with the sticks, bright streamers and masking tape. I take about ten with me rolled in my pocket always.
We need to mark lots of hazards here in New England.
There's always thin ice somewhere!
