i HAVE A DESIGN i HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT FOR ROAD TRIPS OR JUST SO PEOPLE CAN STATED REALATIVELY CHEAP' HAVE BUILT SEVRAL SANDERS BUT THEY ARE TOO HEAVY TO MOVE AROUND. My latest idea would be a be a sander built from mdo plywood. very stable and available. need a top platen aprox 12" wide with legs glued to base. Final platen material for under belt 2" or 3" tempered glass.I added glass to my current sander platen and it works great low heat transfer and platen doesnt expand like it use to. Wheels use 3 "hole saw to cutout of mdo laminate 2 or 3" wide ad bushing. you can also purchase nice wheels at baumont metal works. 40 bucks or so each. The idler is a nother story you need a spring to increase belt tension and a pivot to use for traking of belt. I currently use a 1 hp motor but think a 1/2 or 1/3 might be good enough for a road sander just polishing etc. good luck email if you have questions i will be trying to put together a plan.
