We sail on some dirty ice in Alaska. Wind blown silt covers the ice after a few days. What this lead to last week was 1.5 hours sharpening runners from 3 hours of sailing. I was using Sarns plate runners both bullnose and standard profile and got about 45 minutes of use before side slip became more or less constant. The front runner lasts longer but after 2.5 hours we had to slide forward big time to get much turning effect. Do others ever sail in dusty environments and is there a recommended "best" steel type for sailing in abrasive conditions?
