I'm building a set of insert runners,and have been concerned about the same thing. I've found SS 5/16' barrel nuts w/(10-32)SS FHCS) in McMaster Car that offer a flush mounting surface to the and clamp the runner firmly. The only difficulty may be in drilling a hole through the insert material.
