I'd try filling the gap with raw epoxy like you were thinking. Get the resin warm. Do this by putting the can in a bucket and filling the bucket with hot tap water. Let it sit in the bucket for about 15 minutes, this will get it nice and viscous (it also will get rid of any of that nasty crystalline buildup you can get in resin). I'd then put the hardner in and drizzel it in the gap. After about 30 minutes I'd clamp it. If that doeesn' fix it and it were my runner, I'd tear the body apart and start over again.
