Ken is correct you can save yourself some effort if you buy a mast.

If you are looking for the challenge and reward of building your own it is a fun project and you can achieve a reasonable amount of success.

If you are going to race competetively you should probably consider a glass mast as they are much more durable and in most cases faster.

As for wood; Any lumber yard should have what you need. Redwood is expensive. Basswood maybe a good alternative And I believe that air dried ash would be the best for the nose section.

I have some air dried ash in Minnesota but thats a long way from you. I'm sure a lumber yard out there has it, you just have to call around until you find it.

Good luck,

JD
