I'm racing an 18 year old Spruce hull. It has been split in half length wise once and repaired. It may be a little heavier than original, but I feel it is still pretty competitive. As far as I'm concerned, the main function of the hull is to keep my butt between the sail and the runners. I think the hull probably has the least impact on the success of a program. I would question why anyone would go through the hassle of building a composite hull unless they work with composites for a living, enjoy doing it in their free time and enjoy the challenge. (But then again, different artists prefer different mediums.) I think the class should be careful that it not be percieved (now or in the future) that the composite hulls are faster or necessary to compete. I think as a 'home built' class, the wood hull is stil the best option because building and repairing them is within the abilities of most hobbyists. When trying to get new people in the class, let's not scare them all away by focusing on how much equipment you need and that you need to have the latest & greatest of everything. Let's just go out and sail fast, sail smart, hit a few wind shifts right and have fun with good friends doing something we enjoy.
